Geometric Abstraction and Musical Structure – A Research Perspective
This cultural-historical analysis offers a contextual framework for the research of composer and guitarist David Kayy. It examines how principles of geometric abstraction—long established in visual art—can be translated into operative, sound-generating structures in music. Drawing on art history, music theory, and compositional practice, the study reveals that such a transdisciplinary transfer has so far remained largely unexplored or misunderstood.
Unlike serialist or symbolist approaches of the 20th century, Kayy's method uses spatial-structural principles to shape concrete harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic outcomes. The findings support a new way of thinking about composition—beyond idiom or genre—and open productive dialogues between visual abstraction and musical form.
